Ephesians 3:17-19 (KJV)
17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,
18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;
19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.
In Ephesians 3:17-19, Paul paints a beautiful picture of what it means for Christ to dwell in our hearts by faith. The Greek word for "heart" here is καρδία (kardia), which can be understood as the center of our being. In a spiritual sense, our heart is like a house where Christ takes residence. Just like a home, it’s where we live, where we are shaped, and where our most intimate moments occur. When Jesus dwells in our hearts, He transforms the house from the inside out.
This connection between the heart and a house takes on even deeper meaning when we look at Acts 16:31 (KJV), which says, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house." Here, the word "house" (Greek: οἶκος, oikos) refers not just to the physical structure where we live, but to everyone who is dear to us—our family, friends, and those who are part of our lives.
When we truly believe in Jesus, we invite His love and His presence into the house of our hearts. As we grow in faith, that love spreads to those closest to us.
A heart filled with faith is like a home filled with love and anyone who dwells in our hearts will also be touched by that love through faith.
When the gospel dwells in our hearts, we become rooted and grounded in His love. This is where true transformation begins. Being rooted in the gospel of Christ means our foundation is secure and unshakable.
His love through the gospel is the soil in which our lives grow.
Paul says it’s beyond comprehension in its breadth, length, depth, and height in Ephesians 3. This means that love surpasses all knowledge because it is a love that is eternal and divine, not bound by human understanding.

It extends beyond all limitations even to your loved ones who have passed. As we embrace this love and let it dwell within us, it overflows to those around us. This is why Acts 16:31 speaks of our household being saved by our faith. It’s not just about us individually
It's a ripple effect of Christ’s love that touches those dearest to us. When we are filled with His love, it influences our relationships, our families, and our communities. Christ’s love in us brings peace, joy, and salvation not just to our hearts but to our households. Paul speaks of comprehending the dimensions of Christ’s love. But this is more than just intellectual understanding. It’s the kind of love that goes beyond what we can grasp with our minds and fills us with all the fullness of God. The Greek word for fullness, πλήρωμα (plērōma), refers to completeness or totality. When Christ’s love fills our hearts, we experience the fullness of God. It also means the fullness of his blessings. His love is complete and extends to our whole (complete) family. Sheesh.
We no longer have to strive for approval or acceptance because we are already fully accepted and fully loved in Christ. And this love, in turn, becomes the foundation for how we interact with our household and everyone we encounter.
