5 "Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ."
Oftentimes we struggle with intrusive thoughts. Those thoughts that distract us, discourage us, and draw us away from the peace of God. They tell us lies about who we are, question our salvation, or plant seeds of doubt about God’s goodness. But we must remember something important, our thoughts don’t define us, God’s Word does.
Intrusive thoughts aren’t conquered by dwelling on them, they’re conquered by trusting in Jesus, who has already won the battle for our minds and hearts. The key to peace is not controlling your thoughts but surrendering them to God.
Intrusive thoughts often stem from our tendency to trust ourselves. We rely on our own logic, emotions, and experiences rather than God’s Word. Even in front of the word of God, we tend to trust our thoughts and feelings above His word. When we forget how desperately we need God every moment, we fall back into the trap of believing the lies our thoughts tell us. When we trust in our thoughts instead of God, we’re like Peter stepping out of the boat. The moment he took his eyes off Jesus, he began to sink. The same is true for us. Intrusive thoughts gain power when we focus on them instead of fixing our eyes on Christ.
Jesus died to set us free, not just from sin but also from the power of our thoughts. When intrusive thoughts creep in, we have a choice: believe the lies or stand on the truth of the gospel. The gospel reminds us that we are already holy, righteous, and perfect in God’s eyes because of Jesus.
Peace isn’t found in silencing the voices in our head, it's found by turning up the volume of the gospel in our hearts. We must make the gospel the loudest voice. This drowns out those intrusive voices and thoughts.
We must recognize that intrusive thoughts are part of being human. Don’t deny them or fight them in your own strength. We must learn to replace the lies with truths. That truth is the gospel and God's word. Use Scripture to combat the lie. Bring your thoughts to God in prayer. Remind yourself daily of the finished work of Jesus. That you are already loved, forgiven, and accepted.
Only the Word of God can silence the lies of the enemy.
